The Community Choir concerts on
Mother's Day weekend (May
10th and 11th) will be a program of exceptional musical selections. The
choir
will open the concert with Handel's Joyful, Joyful Day! Other
selections
are Omnia Sol, a beautifully melodic piece in
English and Latin. Its
moving words are a song of farewell, and the human need to express love
in
words.
Glory, Glory,
Hallelujah!, a traditional
African-American spiritual, was written for the University
of Southern Mississippi Choir
This
piece was commissioned to be performed at Carnegie Hall as a fund
raiser to
help provide relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Venita Burch, the
choir's
extraordinary pianist, will open this musical piece with her gorgeous
voice, in
a smooth, southern gospel swing style. Yes..She sings and plays at the
same
time.
PATRIOTISM One of the
most exciting expressions of
patriotism lives in music. I Hear America Singing,
features selected
quotes from several historic personalities. My Country 'tis of Thee and
America
the Beautiful are sung in the background of these memorable
quotes.
Purple
Mountains
Majesties, Spacious Skies. These are the descriptive words Katherine
Bates
wrote of the Rocky Mountains. This
special arrangement
of America,
the Beautiful, generally performed with great pomp and
circumstance, takes
a more reflective style of the original intent of the poem. The softer
setting
and intricate vocal parts sets this version apart from all the rest.
Soprano
soloist Nancy Smith, is one of the choirs most faithful members and is
a
veteran soloist. Her voice is pure and true, a perfect match for this
tender
arrangement.
In the past, The Community
Choir concerts have left the
audience wanting more. Mark your calendars for this special weekend and
plan on
attending more than once.
The Jazz Group will sing Yesterday
and Something Latin.
